PCOS Hair Loss - What Causes PCOS Hair Loss

It is a fact that you have 100,000 hairs on your head and you tend to lose a hundred daily. It grows from the follicle. It grows for around 2 to 6 yrs and then falls out.

New hair begins to grow from the same follicle. Loss in women is 15%. If it so happens that hair falls out but new ones does not grow in its place then this condition is known as alopecia which is even called baldness.

What causes PCOS hair loss?

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) can be caused by failure to grow new hair. Let's see how PCOS can cause loss. PCOS produces an excess amount of male hormones i.e. androgen which in turn results in abnormalities in insulin production.

Hormonal imbalance is thought to be responsible for this.

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) occurs in women, who either have a history of irregular menstrual cycle or have a difficulty getting pregnant. The various symptoms of PCOS are unwanted growth on the face (mainly on the lip and chin), growth of thick hair on the lower abdomen, inner thighs and even between breasts.

PCOS can lead to lowering of voice, bigger muscles and balding.

It is common to have multiple factors in PCOS hair loss. 85% of the hair on our scalp is growing while the other 15% is resting. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a male hormone which is converted from testosterone It makes the follicles go into their resting phase.

The growth starts to deteriorate and it becomes thinner and thinner with growth.

PCOS hair loss is found in women with high androgen levels or women who are in their menopause. They find that the hair on the head is thinning while the hair on the face becomes coarse.

Sex hormone fluctuations and imbalance can be a greater cause for PCOS hair loss.

PCOS hair loss can be caused by hypothyroidism too, which not only contributes to hair thinning but also weight problems.
